What we are about and why:
I (Dana) became a parrot owner in 1985 when I used to work at a local pet store in High School. This was long before pellet diets, avian vets and the internet. Once my children grew older I decided I wanted another bird. I spent weeks on the internet researching species. Thinking I had done my research, my husband (Patrick) and I bought a baby Umbrella cockatoo.
Shortly thereafter I was approached at my office by a woman who overheard me talking about my bird. She asked me if I was interested in another. We then acquired our 2nd Umbrella Cockatoo (Zoe), who was already 6 yrs old and we were to be her 5th home! At first, Zoe was a sweet, wonderful, loving bird. Then she became comfortable with us and turned into a demon. I went back to research.
It was then that we learned about rescue, adoption, abuse, plucking, mutilation and the vast numbers of unwanted parrots who were being shuffled from home to home. After getting involved with BirdLove Avian Sanctuary, located in Columbia, South Carolina, we decided to help the birds as much as possible.
NOTICE:
At the present time we have temporarily relocated to the Miami, Florida area, from a military transfer. Patrick is active duty Coast Guard. However, we intend on retiring in our home state of South Carolina within the next 4/5 years. At that time we anticipate being able to offer a sanctuary setting, as well as adoption services.
